Queenie's Contributions

beloved Cherie, -
I re-read How the Irish Saved Civilization last night and this morning - the early part that deals with the collapse of the Roman Empire is creepily relevant to today. Then ... about the situation in Northern Ireland: Should the Irish be Trusting the Brits? The answer is, of course not! There's an interesting 3 part piece on BuzzFlash about modern history you can't afford to ignore. I recommend it. Also there's discussion again about the "failure" of feminism because of the number of well educated women who choose to stay home and have kids, or otherwise boycott the corporate world. That's a subject for a longer discussion! So all is well here but my mind is racing!

All my love,
Maman

Sigh Brrrr Monday?

"There is just no introspection there at all..."
After a long holiday weekend, QD returns to the blogosphere to find, suprise! George Bush is still ensconced in his role as petulant child refusing to admit he made a boo boo. According to a little piece in the Daily News (Click the quote) staffers are dispirited and blue.

On a related note, QD is half way through Irving Bartlett's book The American Mind in the Mid-Nineteenth Century. This little quote stands out ... "Tocqueville described Americans as "venturous conservatives" who wanted change but feared revolution."

And still we stand today.

QD suspects this fear of revolution is exactly what is wrong with the left. The history of America has long been a balancing act between conservative orthodoxy and materialism versus idealism, innovation and a liberalism based in the belief in the individual.

So here we have on one hand a president who will commit lives to defend mercantilism and nationalism while depriving citizens of bread, roses and rights and what do the Dems do? Nothing. And what does the average citizen do? Nothing. If whining and finger pointing were activism that assessment would have to be changed for there is nothing but whining and finger pointing! But where, in the public arena, are the loud strong voices preaching the antidote to this republican throwback to Calvinism, Imperialism and corporate slavery. Where is the Emerson of the new Millennium?

QD ventures a guess. She suspects that there is a quiet and circumspect revolution afoot. She hears the whispers of revolution around the water cooler. Need less, family more, pay attention to politics, watch and wait to see what the economy will do while at the same time taking strides to outfit oneself and family to be able to produce, to be self sufficient, less dependant, more conscientious. This is not resistance to change for it embraces the new. Computers allow these little quiet pockets to communicate freely. Technology allows the individual to circumvent the great machines of manufacture and a kitchen can be a powerful nerve center for small business, for education, for community, for introspection.

And what then will we do with a leader who stands for arrogance, intolerance and tyranny?

QD has a few ideas.

The rich are different ...

Bob Woodward, rockstar news writer, pop culture icon, and ex journalist, got a little tounge lashing from an acolyte at the WaPo. Americablog has a good piece on it. The rich are different. They get away with things they should not, they are held to lower standards, and they are excused from basic ethical action.
For what it is worth, QD thinks Woodward should be shitcanned. He has proven that his basic allegiance is not to journalism, not to The Washington Post, not to his collegues, but to the almight dollah.

Georgia Sweet Georgia

This weekend, Queenie's Daughter became an aunt again and was delighted to meet her first niece. QD is thrilled to say the least. She is equally besotted with her nephew and is proud to the point of tears of her siblings. What a pleasant little group of people Queenie gave birth to.
Good Job Queenie!

Playing for Peace

Dobbs just got back from Palestine and is playing a concert tonight at St. Barts.
The show is at 7:30 and is twenty bucks at the door. Dobbs will play a Bach suite on the bass and then present an original performance piece based on his recent trip.

We talked to Dobbs last night about his trip, about playing in refuge camps, getting checked at every border crossing, yellow tags, green tags, ID cards and soldiers. His website is worth a look, Dobbs is really doing great work playing for peace. I only wish there were sound clips.

a little explainin to do

QD has been very busy trying to complete her ten year long undergraduate degree in philosophy. Yes, really.

And so lately you, my dear reader, may have noticed that there is an uneven tempo the old blog lately. Last night QD pondered this as she made hesitant love to the MLA second edition, and she thought ... what will it be like to have the albatross gone from day to day existence.

QD is pragmatic. She understands that she probably will pile even more on her plate.

But one thing she vowed was that she want to take a little time to introduce you to the more esoteric and intimate areas of her life. She does not wish to be overly familiar, but she is afraid that has become too glib and is robbing her reader (oh darling maman et al) of the more salient details of the slice of life she serves up more or less daily.

stay tuned ... but take the rest the of the weekend off!

Florida's Tax Payers Fund Holy Water Testing

No but really...
"Katherine Harris, then Florida's secretary of state — and now a member of the U.S. House of Representatives — ordered a study in which, according to an article by Jim Stratton in the Orlando Sentinel, "researchers worked with a rabbi and a cardiologist to test ‘Celestial Drops,' promoted as a canker inhibitor because of its ‘improved fractal design,' ‘infinite levels of order,' and ‘high energy and low entropy.'"
The study determined that the product tested was, basically, water that had apparently been blessed according to the principles of Kabbalic mysticism, "chang[ing] its molecular structure and imbu[ing] it with supernatural healing powers." more

And then there's Rilke

I am too alone in the world, and yet not alone enough
to make every hour holy.
I am too small in the world, and yet not tiny enough
just to stand before you like a thing,
dark and shrewd.
I want my will, and I want to be with my will
as it moves towards deed;
and in those quiet, somehow hesitating times,
when something is approaching,
I want to be with those who are wise
or else alone.
I want always to be a mirror that reflects
your whole being, and never to be too blind
or too oldto hold your heavy, swaying image.
I want to unfold.
Nowhere do I want to remain folded,
because where I am bent and folded, there I am lie.
And I want my meaning
true for you. I want to describe myself
like a painting that I studied
closely for a long, long time,
like a word I finally understood,
like the pitcher of water I use every day ,
like the face of my mother,
like a ship
that carried me
through the deadliest storm of all.

The Silent Treatment

This article about the isolation of the p/resident should be titled "Bitches and Foes."
It is said that Bush is sulking and only talking to his lady friends and NOT talking to his Dad.

It would be sort of funny if, you know, lives weren't at stake.

Sadder than usual Veterans' Day

Queenie's Daughters Universal Plea

Dear Multiverse.
You know that your devoted QD has, in her own little way, been hard working and obedient. And I think we can agree that she has asked for very little and recieved even less in the world of material recompense. She has been exceedingly grateful for what you have bestowed on her, namely: health, happiness and a great deal of love.

It has, however, come to the attention of Queenie's Daughter that she has been remiss. And for this she greatly apologizes. QD has neglected to have the same endless faith in the Multiverse that the Multiverse has had in her. She wishes to remedy this situation right now by making a few specific requests.

Oh sweet Multiverse, QD would like to have, no strings attached, no less then six figures added to her personal net worth. In addition, she wishes to secure gainful employment in a pleasant and stimulating environment which complies with her political views, offers telecommuting and pays well. Finally, QD respectfully asks the Multiverse to see to it that she and her beloved become parents to healthy children for whom they will take full responsibility. Also, dear Multiverse, if you would care to throw in a few extras, QD would like to suggest the following: a largish piece of property by the sea, an undergraduate degree, a drivers license, and an art show for Mr. Queenie's Daughter. Also, baby wants a new pair of shoes.

Multiverse, QD would like to make it clear that she wishes none of these requests to be met if they come at the expense of the health or wellbeing of anyone. If, however, you have some extra fame, fortune, cash, property, exhibition space, children in need of a good home, driver's licenses, college degrees, and good jobs laying around; please feel free to send them to Queenie's Daughter.

Also, an all-clad sautee pan, please, would be really nice.

QD again apologizes for not requesting these things earlier, but she has been busy appreciating what she has and keeping her nose to the grindstone.

If you are unable or unwilling to fulfill these request, no big deal, but if you decide that you feel like it, QD would like to remind you that her shoe size is seven and a half and she prefers to start work around 10 am.

Thanks!
Queenie's Daughter

Found on NOLA Post

Reflection
by Courouge

From a distance I watched as Katrina blew through,
Evacuated just like they said we should do.
From afar I could tell that things were not good,
As water went roaring through my neighborhood.
Seven feet, eight feet, nine feet then ten,
It rose up so quickly that many were penned,
Some did not make it and died there and then,
Without ever having to face rain and wind.
A hurricane rating of Category 5,
It’s a wonder that any at all survived!
Yet people are stronger than most of them know,
Surviving the worst even nature can throw.
The storm’s naked power destroyed my hometown.
Wind, rain and water knocked everything down.
Anything left is at best just debris,
And all that I ask is for someone to help me.
Why does it take so long to be heard?
Does anyone care since I’m not a bird?
If I was endangered and I had a tail,
I could get help from all over the world!
Since I don’t climb trees or bark or lay eggs,
Or walk on all four instead of two legs,
I cannot expect anyone to come to my aid,
Unless they can invoice me and expect to get paid.
Well, the cupboard is bare and the well has run dry,
Nothing is left, so I stand here and sigh,
Trying my best not to break down and cry.
I wonder if anyone cares if I die?

QD says: Life is not back to normal for so many ... what courage Courouge has!

He who smelled it dealt it...

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, said Reid was making "some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak."

Democrats force Senate into unusual closed session

TPM Cafe has Sen. Reid's statement

""The troops and the American people have a right to expect answers and accountability worthy of that sacrifice. For example, 40 Senate Democrats wrote a substantive and detailed letter to the President asking four basic questions about the Administration's Iraq policy and received a four sentence answer in response. These Senators and the American people deserve better.

"They also deserve a searching and comprehensive investigation about how the Bush Administration brought this country to war. Key questions that need to be answered include:
How did the Bush Administration assemble its case for war against Iraq?

Who did Bush Administration officials listen to and who did they ignore?
How did senior Administration officials manipulate or manufacture intelligence presented to the Congress and the American people?
What was the role of the White House Iraq Group or WHIG, a group of senior White House officials tasked with marketing the war and taking down its critics? How did the Administration coordinate its efforts to attack individuals who dared to challenge the Administration's assertions?
Why has the Administration failed to provide Congress with the documents that will shed light on their misconduct and misstatements?

"Unfortunately the Senate committee that should be taking the lead in providing these answers is not. Despite the fact that the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee publicly committed to examine many of these questions more than 1 and ½ years ago, he has chosen not to keep this commitment. Despite the fact that he restated that commitment earlier this year on national television, he has still done nothing.

"At this point, we can only conclude he will continue to put politics ahead of our national security. If he does anything at this point, I suspect he will play political games by producing an analysis that fails to answer any of these important questions. Instead, if history is any guide, this analysis will attempt to disperse and deflect blame away from the Administration.
"We demand that the Intelligence Committee and other committees in this body with jurisdiction over these matters carry out a full and complete investigation immediately as called for by Democrats in the committee's annual intelligence authorization report. Our troops and the American people have sacrificed too much. It is time this Republican-controlled Congress put the interests of the American people ahead of their own political interests."
